This homemade taco seasoning is quick and easy to make with basic pantry spice staples! Full of flavour, easily customizable and so much better than store bought.

Have you ever planned to make a recipe that calls for taco seasoning only to realize you don't have any on hand?
Yep me too. This has happened sooooo many times I figured why not make my own? It's fresher, cheaper and theres no weird additives in it.
I looked at the back of my favourite taco seasoning mix and experimented with several different combinations. After about a dozen tests and having my family use this taco seasoning mix instead, this ratio of spices was our favourite. It's mega flavourful and has the perfect balance of heat, savory - southwestern flavour to it.

What's in Taco Seasoning?
Taco seasoning is comprised of basic pantry staple spices that you probably already have on hand:
- Chili Powder
- Cumin
- Vegetable Boullion (!!): this is the special ingredient that makes this taco seasoning extra yum
- Smoked Paprika (or regular paprika)
- Oregano
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder (or flakes)
- Salt + Pepper
And if you like things extra spicy, feel free to add in a few dashes of cayenne pepper. If you prefer a low sodium taco seasoning mix, then you can halve the amount or omit it completely.
If you're planning to use this seasoning mix for any saucy type of recipes, add in some corn starch to help thicken the sauce.

How to Use Taco Seasoning
The amount below makes about 4 tablespoon which is about 2 store bought packets worth. You can double or even triple the recipe, store it in an air tight spice jar to have ready on hand and it will last for up to 5 months.
This homemade version is great for any recipe that calls for taco seasoning like casseroles, burrito bowls, chili, mixed rice dishes, soups and to season beans and any protein.
I also love using it to spice up crispy roasted sweet potatoes, sprinkling it over potato wedges and popcorn.
Once you start using this homemade taco seasoning, you'll never go back to store-bought 🙂
Here are some of my fav recipes to use it in:
- 10-Minute Mexican Pasta Salad
- Vegan Refined Bean Dip
- Instant Pot Burrito Bowl
- Mexican Stuffed Bell Pepper Casserole
