shia inu dog with homemade dog treats

Hey guys, Happy Sunday! Today, I’m finally getting around to introducing a new member of the family… meet Subie.

Having Subie around was so sudden and spontaneous. Eric (my boyfriend) and I were planning to adopt a puppy after we moved out but out of the blue- my mom asked me if I wanted to adopt a puppy?! Which in insanity because she was the type of mom that NEVER wanted to have a dog. I remember my sisters and I growing up always begging our parents to get a puppy but the obvious, quick answer was always no. They’re hard work, messy and not to mention VERY expensive. I gave up asking, but knew when I moved out adopting a puppy would be first on my to-do list.

Now here she is. Currently sitting beside me snoozing away as I type this blog post for this Vegan Pumpkin Dog Treat recipe out.

I’ve been so busy and occupied taking care of her, honestly I’m pretty set back on a lot of work but thats okay. I want to be there for her especially now when it’ her prime time to learn and grow.

She’s been nothing but… amazing. I’m always so much more happier now. Even when I’m mad, I look over and I forget why I’m mad. My entire family is always smiling and it’s actually crazy how much happiness she’s brought into our family. And as a huge plus, she’s super friendly and she LOVES people.

On the “training” side of things, she learned to poop outside on the second day of coming home. She actually didn’t need any crate training, we just put her bed in there and she willingly goes into the crate when it’s time to sleep or when we need to step out. Right now, we’re working on training her to pee outside & to stop biting … everything!! We’re defiantly going to be taking her to classes as soon as she finishes all her shots because shibas are a pretty stubborn breed. She only really listens if we have a treat (in particular, this puppy pumpkin treat). She even walks over to me and raises her paw every time she wants one!

Subie will defiantly be around on the blog a lot more and I’m super excited about it. If you want to see more of Subie, come say hi over on her instagram! Okay okay, NOW let’s get into these Pumpkin Dog Treats.

vegan pumpkin dog treats on a tray

I had a hard time finding vegan dog treats in the market so I knew I wanted to make my own at home. The benefits of making homemade dog treats is that:

  1. you know exactly everything thats going into them
  2. they’re WAY cheaper
  3. you can customize it to what your puppy likes!

Subie doesn’t really seem to like the dried up meat treats anyways so these are perfect! PLUSSS, it’s pumpkin season soon. Puppies and dogs should be celebrating pumpkin season too!

What Ingredients go into these Vegan Dog Treats?

  • Pumpkin puree – homemade or the canned with JUST pumpkin as the ingredient. Pumpkin is actually really good for dogs because it’s nutrients rich!
  • Peanut butter – because dogs literally go NUTS for this stuff. Make sure to use one that has ONLY peanut butter as the ingredient!
  • Flax Meal – helps maintain healthy skin + coat
  • Oat flour (made from gluten free rolled oats) – as a base because it’s fiber rich + good if your dog is sensitive to gluten too
  • and some cinnamon if you fancy… just a tad and apparently it helps with their breath?

Yuppp, just 4 real simple, real healthy ingredients.

How to Make Vegan Pumpkin Dog Treats

Super easy. Just combine the ingredients together, roll it out, cut them out and bake! Exactly like how you would make regular cookies. The longer they bake, the more crispy the cookies get but make sure not to burn them. I used these super cute dog cookie cutters and also imprinted her name on them… cause I’m a little extra. *cuteness overload*

How to Store These Vegan Pumpkin Dog Treats

There aren’t any preservatives in them so they will last in the fridge for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Andddd, that’s really it! We also shared these with our paw friends and they loved them just as much as Subie! Seriously, she will do anything for one of these.

Before I sign off, I’m just gonna nudge Subie awake now so she can give a quick introduction of herself before we go!

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat: Pre-heat oven to 350 F.
  2. Combine: Add the pumpkin puree, peanut butter, flax meal and cinnamon (if using) into a food processor and blend until combined.
  3. Process: Add in the oat flour and process until a dough forms.
  4. Cut: Lightly flour a cutting board and roll out the dough (around 1/4 inch thick). Use cookie cutters to cut as many pieces as you can and place them onto a parchment lined baking tray. Gather the remaining dough and repeat until you run out of dough.
  5. Bake: Bake for 30-35 minutes.
  6. Let them cool on a cooling rack and them store in the fridge for 1 week or freezer for 2 months.

Notes

*If you don’t have oat flour on hand, use rolled oats (weighed into the same amount) and blend in a high speed blender until a flour consistency.

  1. These dog cookies are inspiring! These cookies will make a great present for my daughter’s mini aussie. What brand cookie cutter and letter stamper did you use?? Navigating thru Amazon for these items are dizzying ;-o

    Thank you, Lisa.

  2. These were a total crowd pleaser! Even the neighbors dogs keep coming back for more!
Thank you for a great recipe.

  3. Thank you so much Lisa! I have made these countless times since I discovered your recipe, my dog loves them! He gets excited and stomps around when he smells them baking in the oven! It seems to mean a lot to him that I hand-make his “special pumpkin treats” 🙂 every friend’s dog I’ve made these for loves them too! Thanks again!!

  4. Hi There!
I don’t have a dog, but I was going to start a pet sitting service and I would like to include a free bag of homemade dog treats. I have decided to use this recipe and I was wondering if I have to store them in the fridge or freezer, or can I just store them in a container in the pantry?
    Thanks!
    -Charlotte😁

  5. Thanks! Recipe is super easy.I added 4 Tblsp nutritional yeast and 3 Tblsp softened coconut oil. The nutritional yeast ( NOT brewers yeast is supposed to help keep fleas away and is great for adding vitamins to dogs diet). Coconut oil for coat and teeth. Even my picky dog liked your treats!
Can you develop a chewy bone treat that is good for dogs?

  6. I adopted Zoe 2 days ago. She is 1 year old, 10lbs. This was her first homemade treat. She was watching my every move while I made them. I made them into tiny balls for training treats. She loves them, although I’ve yet to find a food she won’t eat. Thank you for the healthy recipe for her!

  7. My puppy loved these and they were super easy to make!

Knocking off one star bc I think they gave my pup the runs a bit, thinking probably the flax meal…. Will give her less going forward.

  8. I love to make these and my June Bug just loves them. She has food allergies and on a vegan diet so I started making your recipe for her. I love that you have recipes for 2 and 3 batches. I make larger batches and give them to friends, knowing they are completely safe. And thank you for the link to buy the alphabet stamp. Once again, thank you for being “a little extra!”

  9. Hi i am kavin, its my first time to commenting anyplace, when i read this post i thought i could also create

came about earlier! I bookmarked it.

  11. If you want to obtain much from this article then you
have to apply these techniques to your won blog.

  12. I made these for the first time a few months back for my fussy little chihuahua and she absolutely LOVES them! When she knows she’s getting one, her eyes light up and she starts spinning and standing on her back feet with excitement! I have made them numerous times now…I am from the UK though so tinned pumpkin is hard to come by so (excluding the first time I made them) I have been cooking butternut squash instead and blending it – she can have the real deal near halloween! Anyway, I just want to say thank you so much for this recipe, it’s so easy to make and it’s so nice to be able to give my dog a treat she loves!

  13. Just made these and my dog loved them! They turned out so cute and I love that you know exactly what’s going in them 🙂 I also used my letter board to write his name and it turned out adorable!

  14. Easy to make and my vegan pups love them! I used oats and made my own oat flour. My question is if ceci powder (chickpea) would work as a swap 1:1? Thank you!

  15. I dont have a food processor can l use a blender or hand mixer…or which one of these is best to use…thks l left this question over week ago…thks…like to make today

  16. I have just made these for my daughters beloved hound who is vegan like his humans.

    So will freeze for now

  17. Hi, l am going to make these, and u have 5 stars before even them trying because they r vegan….eat with compassion…only my cats cant be vegans. My question l dont cook much actually hate it ! So l dont have a food processor but can l use a blender l use for fluids to blend what needs blending. Thanks

  18. This recipe looks amazing! I have a warning though- do not try with chickpea flour!!! I was trying to make this for my nephew dog who’s birthday is today. I saw some other recipes online where CF was added as a substitute- He is grain free and I did not have oats in the house. It changed the consistency and tasted awful. I will be trying this again with the right ingredients. Hopefully by then the cute little letter imprints come in too! 🙂 thank you!

  19. Thanks so much for posting this recipe ! My dog Miles loves it so much . I also used a letter press to stamp my dog’s name in the treat ! I wrote about your recipe in my blog, carrotsformiles.

  20. Is it flax meal or flax seed? In the ingredients you have it as meal but the instructions say seed.. please advise.

  21. We just adopted a great pyrenees mix a few
weeks ago. He is 2 years old and found out that he has a super sensitive tummy, especially to chicken which seems to be in almost every store bought treat. I made these for him and he LOVES them! Super easy on his tummy and I absolutely love the fact that I know exactly what is going into his body. Thank you so much for the recipe!

  22. Our dog LOVED these! We made them first with pumpkin puree, and tried them again with sweet potato puree. Both were a hit. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to any more dog treat recipes you have 🙂 Our dog is allergic to animal proteins so these vegan recipes are perfect.

    1. So is my dog! Is your dog on a hydrolyzed protein diet? That’s what mine is on and it has helped him so much! I also make him vegan treats because it’s almost impossible to find him low cost hydrolyzed protein treats!

  23. Perfect and easy to follow can’t wait for my buddy to try these out! Didn’t have a cookie cutter so I did some sculpting lol ! Thanks for the recipe!

  24. My two shih-tzu’s love these treats. So inexpensive to make and you know what is on them! Thank you for the recipe.

  25. Our dog LOVED these treats, and I love it b/c it’s such a quick, guilt-free, & easy recipe! Thank you for sharing!!

  26. I haven’t tried your recipe yet but I think my dogs will like them. They love baked sweet potatoes, so I might use that rather than pumpkin. I was looking for a sweet potato and black bean dog treat recipe actually but couldn’t find one. I might sneak some black beans in there too! 🙂

I’ve recently learned that my older dog, Leroy, who’s usually fussy loves dried beet chips and dried zucchini chips. He’s getting less fussy as he’s gotten older! My other dog, Charlotte, loves most fruits and veggies and always has. It makes me happy to give them healthy treats made at home.

    1. If they’re completely dry (as in no moisture / not soft) they can be stored outside! I use mine within a weethough.

    1. Hi Katherine,

I used a cookie cutter i got from japan that lets me make the names. It’s like a leggo kind of thing, it’s here on amazon 🙂 I hope that helps!

  27. Not only puppies but also adults will love these treats… Safe and healthy for your lovely pet! Thanks for sharing this information with us!
